Take a Walk Through Scripture
The Bible is made up of words, right?
That’s true, but the Bible is also full of sights, sounds, smells, tastes and things to feel.
Today, February 6 in my One Year Chronological blog, we walked through Exodus 19. It’s one of the most sensational chapters in the Bible; an encounter with God that’s full of things to see, hear and feel. I invite you to grab your Bible, a pen and some paper, and walk through these twenty-five power-packed verses with me. Along the way you may learn a great new way to engage the Scriptures!
Exodus 19:1-25
Exodus 19 is one of the most powerful chapters in the Bible. I invite you to move into this passage and “walk around” in it.
Imagine . . .
you are in a vast desert with an incredibly rugged mountain rising up before you. Behind you thousands of families are setting up tents and settling in for the night.
The solitary figure of Moses emerges from the crowd and carrying his staff, he starts up the mountain. The voice of God calls to him.
“This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you[a] will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.” Exodus 19:3-6
Go back down the mountain . . .
with Moses and gather with the elders of Israel. Listen to what Moses tells them in Exodus 19:7-14. Would you join them in promising to do everything the Lord has said to them?
Now read Exodus 19:16-19. What do you see and hear? What does the ground beneath your feet feel like, and what do you smell in the air? How would you describe the fire on the mountain?
In the cacophony of trumpet blasts . . .
Moses speaks to God and God answers him. God calls him to the top of the trembling mountain, into the billowing smoke and flames of fire. You are now where no one else that day was allowed to go, with Moses, listening to what God says.
In Exodus 19:20-25, God teaches his people about the Fear of God. In case they don’t understand what that means, God sends Moses back down the mountain with some reminders. What do you think and feel when you read those instructions?
What new thoughts do you have about God after reading Exodus 19 today?
Enjoy Your Senses
You have just shared the experience Israel had when they met God at Mt. Sinai. Now that your senses are alive, keep reading Scripture and use your imagination to move into it and take a walk around.
